Halloween Kids Activities

Activities

_at Word Family Activities
Bat activity

Objectives

  • Distinguish spoken rhyming words from non-rhyming words.
  • Orally produce rhyming words in response to spoken words (e.g., What rhymes with hat?).
  • Identify words in the “at” family.

Materials

Directions:

Introduce the following rhyme to children:

A little black cat
Who was wearing a hat
Sat on a mat.
Along came a black bat
Who chased the little black cat
Who was wearing a hat
Off the mat.

Encourage children to point out the words that rhyme.

Help children to think of other words that rhyme with bat: bat, cat, rat, hat, sat, mat, flat, fat, and pat.

Using magnetic letters, form the word “bat.” Ask children to change the first letter of the word to make a new word such as "cat." Make sure to provide a limited number of letters (two or three at first) for children to choose from.

Extension:

Remember to review the _at word family periodically through emergent reader booklets and provide opportunities for your children to apply their new reading skills by playing a _at word family games like the At the Bat Word Family Folder Game.
